Lydia McCarthy Art MORE LIFE / 2022

The Drake album ‘More Life’ was a soundtrack of my life for two years, and those words a mantra. Moving through heartbreak, into being a single woman in my late 30s, this collaborative mixtape soothed me, gave me something to dance to and permeated my work. It helped me to embrace the full, messy, complicated experience of life. I want more life.

Life After Death
is a series of new videos started during the 2021 winter wave of Covid. In them, I perform decision-making games, self-help, feminist texts and acts of self-care to reveal the complexities of relationships in this moment. Using tropes from reality TV confessionals and Instagram celebrity accounts, I obsessively reflect on dating, sex and self. Each video is rooted in the morse code distress signal SOS. Since the pandemic began, I felt a heightened urgency for human contact, which now involves a new level of risk. SOS represents this distanced desperation, signalling into the world, hoping for response.
